Interview:

R: Do you have a Facebook?

M: Yes I have had a Facebook since 2007.

R: Yeah me too. I guess that was around the time it started to get popular

M: Yeah that's when most people started to get one.

R: What do you typically use Facebook for?

M: For social networking with my friends, my family, my coworkers and my classmates.

R: Oh so you connect with classmates? What do you usually talk yo them about?

M: Well for one of my classes we were working on a group project, and we made up a Facebook group with our class name in it and sent each other power-points  and communicated through the Facebook group to get the project done

R: Oh okay, yeah I know a lot of college students do things like that.

M: Yeah it's very helpful because we all know we're going to be on Facebook at some point during the day (laughs)

R: That's cool. Have you ever considered using Facebook for your individual assignments?

M: How?

R: Like posting a status asking your Facebook friends to take a survey for class or posting an essay question as a status to get friends feedback?

M:  I have asked through a Facebook status, to help me with an essay. I remember one specific event when I had to write a paper on teaching resources, and I wrote a status saying “Does anyone know good resources for teachers?” and I got an a variety of answers to help me with my paper and they gave me great resources I could use. 

R: Oh okay I remember I did that too except mine was regarding junk food in public schools. I also got a a lot of good answers that I put into my essay.

M: Yeah I would usually only use Facebook to get opinions though, I wouldn't relay on my friends to give me straight facts, I do my research for that.

R: Yeah I definitely understand that. I know you're an elementary ed and psych major. Do you use Facebook mainly for your education classes or you psych class?

M: I use them to help me with mainly my education classes because I can get a lot of input about different topics from different people.

R: So I guess you're friends with a lot of prospective teachers on Facebook?

M: Yeah I'm friends with a lot of people that are in my classes so I usually get feedback from them.

R: Oh well that's good that you can relay on them to help you.

M: Yeah

R: I know you have other social networking sites, do you use those to help you in class assignments too or just Facebook?

M: No I've only used Facebook.

R: Okay, I guess it's the best site to use to get feedback like that.

M: Yeah exactly using Twitter or other sites like that would just be awkward (laughs)

R: (Laughs) yeah that's true. How many times have you used Facebook for assignments?

M: Only a few. I don’t really like to because there aren't many reliable sources, but it usually helps me get ideas to find those sources.

R: Okay that makes sense. Will you keep using Facebook to get friends opinions on assignments?

M: Yeah I would definitely consider it again. Facebook is good and you may get opinions from people that never even crossed your mind.

R:Yeah, that's why I like using it. You can get ideas you never even thought of.

M: Yeah

R: Okay my last question to you is, if you would recommend it for other students?

M: I think it could be a good idea for college students to use it to get some opinions to help them with difficult assignments, but check the sources to make sure they are correct.

R: I definitely agree with that. You need to use reliable sources as well....well thanks so much for taking time to interview with me.

M: You're welcome
